Antonov An-22 Antei (Russian: Антей Antaeus) (NATO code "Cock") was the heaviest aircraft wings (high wing) in the world, until the emergence of the C-5 Galaxy from the American and An-124 from the Soviet Union. Powered by four turboprop engines each of which is controlled by a pair of propeller rotates counterclockwise, this design is still the world's largest turboprop aircraft. His first appearance outside the Soviet Union in 1965 at the Paris Air Show.
Before the introduction of the C-5 Galaxy, the An-22 Antei (Antheus) is the largest aircraft in the world, and until now the largest turboprop-powered aircraft to date. An-22 cargo transport aircraft wearing traditional design with wings mounted high on the fuselage that allows the cargo space along 108 feet (33m) and the cargo volume of 22,500 cubic feet (639 cubic meters).
In fact, An-22 is basically a version of the "raised" from the An-12 except that the redesigned tail design into a twin vertical tail fin. This aircraft produces exceptional performance with the use of four of the most powerful turboprop engines, each one wearing the propeller contra-rotating which resulted in significant slipstream over the wing.
Combined with the "double-slotted flaps" big round rear end of the wing, the An-22 is capable of operating on a relatively short runway for aircraft size. With this powerful engine, this aircraft also has made some world records haulage and haulage-to-height. Uneven landing gear made for operation in rough terrain, and the tire pressure can be adjusted on-the-fly to optimize the performance of the landing. Front fuselage is pressurized to provide space for 5 to 8 crew and up to 28 passengers, but not pressurized cargo space allowing cargo door opened during flight to paradrops.
Although 100 An-22 aircraft have been ordered by the Soviet Air Force and Aeroflot, but only about half were made. About 45 are still in operation in the mid-1990s, most of the Russian Air Force, but it is slowly being replaced by the An-124.
